Faculty of Navigation: Get a respected profession!
In the time of economic crisis, the issue of getting a respected and promising profession becomes relevant not only for young people, but also for specialists in different fields that are not profitable any more. Would like a good job but don’t know where to find it? We offer you a way out – enter the Faculty of Navigation at the State University of Infrastructure and Technologies! If you become a student of our institution, you will have a possibility to get a profitable profession and increase your social status. Why so?
At all times, the ship’s handling was considered prestigious and responsible. People thought that seafarers and river transport workers were real professionals, self-controlled and strong-willed. Skillfully steering huge ships, they always delivered cargo or passengers to their destination in time in spite of difficulties. Has it become easier with technical progress? Nothing of the kind!
In the twenty-first century, training of seafarers does not only call for advanced knowledge of navigation, rules of ships’ operation and maritime terminology, but also considerable experience in logistics. The world’s ocean runs billions of ships that carry cargo and passengers. Their task is to arrive in the port of destination in a clearly defined time and deliver people (or cargo) safe and sound.
That’s why training skilled specialists in the field of maritime and river navigation requires taking into account the current situation in this industry. Self-study alone is absolutely impossible. Besides, not every institution can provide education suitable for crewing companies. A high-class navigator should be able to draw up routes, handle the vessel’s operation in accordance with international standards, do all the paperwork, manage a large mixed crew, etc. What educational institutions can provide such a training?
Studying at the State University of Infrastructure and Technologies: Faculty of Navigation in Kyiv and other cities.
The State University of Infrastructure and Technologies provides training for future seafarers who will be able to start their first voyage right on the next day after graduation and prove themselves there. The Faculty offers instruction in these fields of specialism:
- Maritime transport (cargo and passenger transportation)
- River transport (including mixed navigation along the Mediterranean coastline)
Benefits for any field of specialism:
- Fundamental theoretical basis (all our teachers have extensive teaching and on-the-job experience, so the students receive the most advanced knowledge)
- Great shipboard experience (while studying at the Faculty of Navigation, a student spends at least twelve months in international voyages as a deck cadet)
- Complete set of documents (diploma of education, seaman’s passport and work diploma will allow you to work on board a ship immediately after graduation)
- Fluent English (Upper Intermediate + specific terminology)
- Development of soft skills (self-control, leadership skills, time management skills, emotional intelligence, etc.)
On graduation from the Faculty of Navigation of the State University of Infrastructure and Technologies, every graduate will be able to work as:
- Captain’s Assistant
- Second Mate
- Chief Mate
- Captain Engineer (specialism “River Transport”)
- Port Master
Sooner or later every seafarer decides to work ashore. Navigation solves all the problems with future revenues – your knowledge and skills (along with the vast experience) are enough to work “on land” at the following positions:
- Surveyor of a shipping company
If you live far from the capital and do not want to leave your home, do not worry! There are several subdivisions that have Faculties of Navigation – Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Izmail, Kilia, so high school graduates of the southern regions can easily get their core education not far from home.
Dear entrants! Please note that now, as never before, people appreciate a profession that can not only give immediate income, but also become a fundamental basis for successful career. Our graduate gets everything – money and prestige, respect and admiration, a high level of professionalism and excellent personal qualities, and of course, a rapid career growth. Do you feel the desire to become one of us? Enter the Faculty of Navigation at State University of Infrastructure and Technologies and become part of our success!

The Faculty of Navigation provides education:
- field of study 27 “Transport”, area of expertise 271 “River and Maritime transport” specialism “Navigation and Ship Handling;
- field of study 0701 “Transport and Transport Infrastructure” area of expertise “Maritime and River Transport” specialism “Navigation” according to Bachelor and Master Degree.
Navigation and Ship Handling of Inland and Mixed Navigation
According to the “Regulations on the officers of seagoing vessels rank and the procedure for their assignment” approved by the Order of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine dated August 7, 2013, No. 567, officers may be assigned as a Captain Engineer. The fleet has a similar position. This mainly refers to the “Port Fleet” and “River Fleet”.
For example, if we talk about navigation through the Dnipro River, all ships will combine positions … namely, Captain-Engineer. But no specialty in Ukraine allows such a combination. That’s why people usually look for other ways, do additional training, etc.
The introduction of the specialism “Navigation and Ship Handling of Inland and Mixed Navigation” within educational program of area of expertise 271 “River and Maritime Transport”, field of study 27 “Transport” (the first (Bachelor) degree) will help solve this problem. It will also contribute to the application of the Strategy for the implementation of the directives and regulations of the European Union in the field of international maritime and inland water transport.
“Computer-integrated Technologies of Navigation and Ship Handling”
With the development of unmanned traffic (unmanned navigation), computer-integrated technologies are widely implemented.
Of course, there is a need for highly skilled personnel to handle unmanned ships, who should have special knowledge. Also, it should be noted that the required qualifications and skills are very different from those of the usual certified seaman.
A new specialism “Computer-integrated Technologies of Navigation and Ship Handling” (area of expertise 151 “Automation and computer-integrated technologies”, field of study 15 “Automation and instrumentation”, the first (Bachelor) degree) will satisfy the need. Port services, international traffic centres, etc. require such professionals.
Students mastering this specialty will thoroughly study the special branches of mathematics, methods of management theory, modern information technologies, computer systems and networks, methods of processing and protecting information, advanced programming technologies and microprocessor technology, as well as a number of subjects related to the maritime industry.
Education is full-time or part-time, state-granted or granted by individuals and legal entities.
The degree-granting department is the Department of Navigation and Ship Handling.
